A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible threats posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been told to refrain from discussing secret information in all vehicles.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
In a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He explained that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.
We have a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Defence Background
The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
The broader defence situation underscores the importance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of official activities, including transport use to discussions habits.
