Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to question certain rulings made by the official, echoing the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
